Poole March - May 2004

Some pictures of some of the Trains to visit Poole between March and May 2004

73096 Draws into Poole, from Weymouth on the return leg of Steam Dreams Sunny South Special Steam Tour from Clapham Junction.

47709 Runs through Platform 1 shadowing the Sunny South Specials. This 47 was the second class 47 to visit Poole in the same month.

Another shot of the 47 leaving Poole. This 47 was sounding rough and as various reports on the discussion groups reported this loco was chucking out more exhaust than the Steam loco. This was one sick loco.

Class 442 2401 part of a 10 car unit awaits the green light to start the 07:48 Poole - Waterloo on 01/05/03. The starter signal protects the pedestrian level crossing next to the White building in the background and to the right.

47703 sits idling in Platform 1 at Poole on Saturday 01/05/04 @ 07:55 with the Very Special Trains charter to Spalding. This is the first class 47 locomotive to actually leave on a passenger service from Poole for nearly 2 years.

Class 412 2315 arrives at Poole on 30/04/04 with the Brockenhurst - Wareham stopper. This service is likely to be replaced by a Class 442 (Wessex Electric/Plastic Pig) but might see the occasional Desiro ( Dorito) on it.

On 01/05/04 Very Special Trains will run a charter train to Spalding for the international flower show. Here class 47703 is seen at Poole approaching the carriage sidings where it will run round be stabled for the night befor the trip to Spalding on Saturday.

The consist of the train was a bit colorful to sat the least with 6 ex Virgin trains MK2F's Air con coaches, 1 Blue Restraunt car and a Blue /Grey MK2 BSO. One can clearly see the VST branding Stuck over the ex "Virgin" Branding. This was taken from the lane-way that runs along side the carrige sidings at Poole.

Poole yard for 40+ years was a busy yard but since the late 80's you will be stretched to see any activty at all. There are a total of 3 sidings that have been kept and out of these only one is electrified for storage of EMU's due to failures or engineering possesions. Above a Network Rail Tamper is parked up ready for its next job. These mainly move around at night so are a bit hard to try and capture during the daytime on the move!!!!

66037 approaches Poole with a fully loaded sand train from Wool on 07/04/04. Shortly after this train appeared the second half of the train went South to Wool, hauled by another 66. That portion will return at about 15:30 in the afternoon.

On the same day and on test and stopping for a brief time in Poole is the latest generation of trains for the Waterloo - Weymouth route as well as Portsmouth. Class 450 Desiro # 450072.

These new 4-car units from 450001 - 450110 are allocated to Northam , just outside Southampton, and are replacing the old Slam door type trains. Although it is expected that some of these will be in use along the route the majority of them will be working the suburban routes out of Waterloo. The Class 444's 5 car units are expected to run the long distance routes to Weymouth and Portsmouth. The Class 442's are staying on the Waterloo - Weymouth route some people have remarked that these are being withdrawn.... YEAH RIGHT!!!!

67006 On the Serco test train dated 29/03/04 around 16:50. These have replaced the EWS class 47's due tot he fact that EWS are witdrawing there veteran class 47 fleet.

This train does the rounds around the UK Rail-Network about 2 - 3 times a year. The train was destined to go down to the West Country the next day. Due to the 67's not having the route availability for certain areas of the trip down 2 class 37's were rostered to take it from Bournemouth TR&SMD the next day. The pair of 67's returned light to Eastleigh later that night.

67019 was the second Class 67 on the train at the back. This was only the 3 and 4th 67's to visit Poole since August 2003 and the first ever visit of the class on the Hamworthy goods branch, The Furzebrook line and all the way to Weymouth.

66066 on the Hammworthy - Merehead empty stone train. This followed shortly after the 67's went through.
