Eastleigh 03-12-04

Over the last few weekends Network Rail have undertaken a £4.5 million renewal program of the points at the Southern end of Eastleigh Station, as well as renewing the down fast and slow lines and the Portsmouth line on Platform 3. This work was similar to the work that was carried out at the north end of the station 2 years ago. This amounted to an unusual amount of engineering rolling stock around the station and in the yard area, as well as a slight mishap (see the first pic below)

We start off on a well foggy day at Eastleigh looking South where the engineering works over the past 5 weeks have taken place. The signal E36 (directly in front) was part of a gantry which also housed the down fast 4 aspect signal E38. Unfortunately a dumper / Digger hit the signal gantry and took the top of it off. Thus the reason for the little 4 aspect temp signal on the right hand side of the shot. Note that the red light is on top, due to the signal being located on the ground. By the looks of it the entire gantry will be moved to the left somewhat. Where the wagons on the left hand side a bit further down is the location of the other half of the gantry and signal that was knocked off. It is hoped that the signal will be up this weekend.

It had delivered a rake of Yellow Network Rail JNA's loaded with ballast for one of the many engineering contracts over the weekend. 66706 + 66710 took this train out of the yard a few minutes later.
