The Class 442's - The Names
Of the 24 Class 442 units only 3 were not named. What follows is most of the names as far as I have got photos of. If you have any of the ones I have not got here and would not mind displaying them then please email me at
The names are carried on the MBRSM. Unfortunately all of the units have now had their names removed before or just after they went off lease from South West Trains.No Photo
2401 Beaulieu. This was named at Brockenhurst Station by the son of Lord Montague on June 30th 1989 to mark the occasion of the completion of the station refurbishment at Beaulieu and the association of the town with South West Trains.

2402 County of Hampshire. It was named at Eastleigh Station on April 17th 1989. This was the first Class 442 to be named, and was so named as part of the Waterloo - Weymouth mainline runs through Hampshire.
2403 The New Forest. This was named at Brockenhurst station on 22nd April 1991 in recognition of Network Southeast's partnership with The New Forest's District council. This name was also carried in the buffet car of 4Rep 3014.

2404 Borough of Woking This was named at Woking Station on November 10 1995 as a twinning of the town with South West Trains.
2405 City of Portsmouth. This unit was named at Portsmouth & Southsea station on August 21st 1992. This was named as to mark the 150th anniversary of the association of Railways and the city of Portsmouth and the launch of the Wessex Electric units on the Waterloo - Portsmouth route.
2406 Victory. Named at Portsmouth Harbour station on October 21st 1992 in association with the HMS Victory ship in Portsmouth Naval Yard.
2407 Thomas Hardy. Named at Dorchester South station on June 5th 1990 in honor of the 150th anniversary of Thomas Hardy's Birth.
2408 County of Dorset. Named at Weymouth station on October 5th 1990 as celebration of the completion of refurbishment work on Pokesdown and Weymouth stations.

2409 Bournemouth Orchestra's. Named at Waterloo station on May 22nd 1993 in honor of the centenary of the Bournemouth Orchestra.
2410 Meridian Tonight Named after the ITV local news program Meridian Tonight at Southampton Central Station on May 31st 1994.

2411 The Railway Children. Named at Waterloo Station, London on July 30th 2003 to Honor the Railway charity of the same name.
2412 Special Olympics named at Portsmouth & Southsea station on July 15th 1997 in honor of the Special Olympics being held at Portsmouth.

2415 Mary Rose Named to honor the Mary Rose Exhibition and to also celebrate the beginning of the Wessex Electrics use along the Waterloo - Portsmouth mainline. It was named at Portsmouth & Southsea station on June 1st 1992.
2416 Mum in a Million 1997 Doreen Scanlon Named at Waterloo station by HSA mum in a million winner Doreen Scanlon on March 10th 1997.

2417 Woking Homes Named at Woking Station on October 22nd 2001 in honor of the railways long standing relationship with the charity.

2418 Wessex Cancer Trust Named to honor the charity of the same name at Southampton on March 20th 1995.
2419 BBC South Today. Named at Southampton Central Station on September 5th 1989, to mark the "twinning " of the local BBC news program with South West Trains.

2420 City of Southampton. Named at Southampton Central Station on December 9th 1994 to mark 155th anniversary of the association of the railway and Southampton.

2422 Operation Overlord was named at Fareham station on May 27th 1994 to mark the 50th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

2423 County of Surrey. Named July 15th 1992 to honor the commencement of the Wessex Electrics on the Waterloo - Portsmouth route and the co-operation of Surrey council and South West Trains.

2424 Gerry Newson. Named at Bournemouth T&RSMD on November 14th 2000 in honor of a fitter & Railwayman that worked at the depot.
