The Class 442's - Piggin mishaps

Pronounced as Piggin Mishaps this section is aimed at Pigs in trouble, Simply put into Laymen terms Pigs misbehaving!! Some not entirely of their own making either. Some of these pics are video caps I have taken of video footage I have been given and will be stated as and when they appear. I am still after some shots of pigs in trouble, so drop me a line if you have any.

2417 - Parkstone December 11th 1988

Probably the most noticeable mishap with a pig was for all the wrong reasons. On December 11th 1988 2417 was passing through Parkstone station on its way to Poole for its stop when it hit a builders cement mixer that was wheeled from the platform at Parkstone station and placed on the down line so it would foul it, by braindead vandals WHO STILL have not been caught. 2417 hit the cement mixer and was derailed. The leading DTSO demolished a parapet on Salterns road bridge and became precariously balanced hanging off the bridge and over some gardens. No one was killed but if I remember correctly a pregnant woman needed hospital treatment. This was the prelude to one of the worst days in BR history. The Rail disaster at Clapham Junction where some 35 people were killed. A day that will go down in history as one of the worst railway accidents ever.

After the DTSO of 2417 was rerailed it was hauled back to Poole by 33106+ and unidentified 4-TC set. here you can clearly see the damage done to the front end of 2417. The Air dam has disintergrated, the Pick up shoe and beam and associated wires have been ripped off, the handles next to the hoses housing were either ripped off or severely damaged as well as the plate below the hose housing. Its seen here after arrival at Platform 1 and waiting to go into the carriage sidings at Poole for the locomotive to run round.

Another shot this time with 33106 at the front. There was also some slight damage done to the second coach (TSO). The DTSO of 2417 was sent to Derby for repair. When this crash happened 2417 was just over 4 months new to Network Southeast. 2417's DTSO returned in January 1989.

Another shot of 33106 and 2417 heading for Bournemouth.

2407 - Bournemouth T&RSMD 3rd September 1989

Sunday September 3rd was the date when 2407 ran away from Bournemouth shed through the buffer stops and landed into Wharfdale Road. Thousands of pounds worth of damage were caused when it is believed the units Brakes failed and the unit sped down the gradient on the carriage washing line and ploughed through the buffer stop destroying them in the process and finally embedding itself on the grassy verge and road. It was pulled out a few days later. Its not the first train to have done this trick. a 47 did this a few years before or later and ended up having to be lifted back onto the track.

Here lies 2407, after smashing through the bufferstop (which part of it can be seen to the right of the picture laying on the road) and coming to rest dug in on the grass verge. Visible damage can be seen to the air dam as the front end was destroyed. The unit went off to Eastleigh for repair and was not back in service until February 1990. It was named Thomas Hardy a few months later in June of the same year. Please note this image is Copyright © David Fallows 2007

Taken from over the fence at Bournemouth depot a shot of the MBRSM and the rest of the 2407 derailed at Bournemouth. This unit hit the buffer stop at the end of the line in which the washing plant is located.

Oddball Moments

Not so much of a pig misbehaving but generally when the current goes pop!! Mind your eyes please. 2408's pick up shoe arcs as it leaves the 3rd rail while crossing over to enter the carriage sidings at Poole on February 20th 2005.

Two shots of 2404 with no air dam after hitting "something" on June 1st 2006.
