The 442's Remembered

The 5 WES Pages

The beginning of 2007 sees the end of perhaps one of British Rail's most successful multiple units. Loved by many, unloved by some, the 100 mph Wessex Electrics or better known as Wessex Pigs, Plastic Pigs or by their tops code of Class 442, were based on the acclaimed Mark 3 design like the HST. These were the first 100 mph units working along the Waterloo - Weymouth route. These started earning their keep in 1988 with Network South East and finished way before their time with South West Trains on February 3rd 2007. It seems now that some of the 442's will be kept for work on the Gatwick Express Franchise and for Southern.
