Poole January - June 2006

To start off a new year nothing much happened in January so the photos are starting from February instead. I also took delivery of a new digital camera. A Sony Cybershot DSC R1 so most of my photos from now on will be taken with this camera as well as the odd photo being taken with the 7.2 megapixel camera as well. The 1st photo on this page (at the bottom) is taken with the 7.2 megapixel the rest will be taken with the R1. I will try and add what camera took what underneath each photo.

Southwest Trains Bubble Car 960012 John Cameron approaches Poole on a run from Salisbury - Weymouth via Reading and Basingstoke. Its seen here on the return leg, the 5Z22 Weymouth to Barton Hill Carriage Sidings leg of its run on June 7th 2006 (R1)

960012 was halted at Poole's starter signal due to a service train leaving about 4 minutes previously. This was the first time this had been to "our neck o the woods". It had apparently been on a run for seeing how "bad" the vegetation along the line was... Apparently. The day before it had been released from having a new fuel tank fitted.(R1)

A vantage shot soon to disappear Poole's local tamper DR73276 bathes in the late afternoon sun in Poole yard. When the redevelopment of Poole yard starts the three lines in the yard will be cut down to just two and slewed over closer to platform 1. So get your shots in while you can.(R1)

47811 + 2406 "Victory" leave the run round / carriage sidings at Poole on June 1st 2006. This was on the way to Bournemouth Depot after coming from Ilford Depot and refurbishment.(R1)

The rear view of 2406 This ran back to Bournemouth Depot as the 5X42 Ilford - Bournemouth T&RSMD via Poole. It was stopped at Poole as a service train had only left by a few minutes. More pics of this can be seen on James Mayle's excellent site UK Railpics. Currently only 4 Pigs have gone and come back from refubishment. These are 2401, 2405, 2406, & 2407. 2404 is expected to go next (see below for possible reasons why). (R1)

66566 stops at Poole waiting for a clean run upto Southampton Maritime.(R1)

This loco I needed so I decided to get some shots as well. Here a Black & White version just before she gets the green light to leave.(R1)

2404 arrives at Poole on a Waterloo - Poole service. For some strange reason I could not think why the unit looked different... Well it did... Have you worked out what it is? (R1)

Yep its the front skirt that has been completely snapped off from the front and drivers side. With a little bit still on the offside. What caused this damage is unclear but the driver said he took over at Southampton and was unaware what caused it. I believe the unit was taken out of service as 2415 came down as an ECS from Bournemouth about 45 minutes before and went into the carriage sidings. 2415 then left on 2404's train, and 2404 went to Bournemouth depot as an ecs. It looks as though 2404 will be the next one to go for refurbishment.(R1)

2409+2410 coupled together on a Poole - Waterloo service prepares to leave on May 9th.(R1)

With 2409 & 2410 preparing to leave on a Poole - Waterloo service, 444008 arrives on a Brockenhurst - Wareham service. This view from the footbridge at Poole is soon to change as yet another station is to be built with a hotel where the current station building is placed and the footbridge I am on to disappear and a new footbridge which has to be DDOA compliant so it should include lifts. This should be built around in between the customer information panel and the passenger shelter, which can be seen on platform 2. Lets hope they provide some sort of decent shelter on the platforms.(R1)

Seen from the footbridge looking across Holes Bay Bridge some 1.19 miles away (as the crow flies) 444008 passes bound for Wareham. The next stop will be Hamworthy.(R1)

The nose end 2421. If you look closely I am in there somewhere EEK!!! (R1)

66609 arrives on an empty sand working from Neasdon and heading to Dorchester south. This will in theory shunt the wagons into the sidings at Dorchester, then uncouple half of them and then pull the remaining half into the platform uncouple from them and then run round and take them to Wool. It will then, after its shunted the wagons into the sidings, head back to Dorchester and pick up the remaining half of the wagons and then run round them and take them to Wool sidings. After its taking them to the sidings it will then return to Southampton Maritime as a light engine move some time in the evening.(R1)

Another shot of 66609. Freightliner have ordered another 16 Class 66 locomotives. So there is possibility that when they have arrived some will work down tot his area of the network.(R1)

2406 leaves Poole carriage sidings with a Poole - Waterloo service on a sunny May 4th evening 2006. Before anyone moans. I was still on the station platform but led down. Hence this is how I managed to get the shot, even if the driver was a bit bemused by it. :) (R1)

Just under 3 months on since 47811 bought 2401 back from Ilford and refurbishment, and in nearly the exact same place of that shot (see photos bottom of the page) 47811 brings back 2405 "City of Portsmouth" from its refurbishment at Ilford. The following Tuesday 2406 finally went to Ilford behind 47811 for its (basicly a repaint and touch up!!) refurb. To date 2401, 2405,2406 & 2407 have gone for refurbishment.(R1)

Two more shots of the rear cab of 2405.

47811 appears on its own as it runs round 2405.

An unidentified 5 car 442 unit terminates on the Up Mainline at Poole. The only reason I can work out why this was is that 47811+2405 were in one siding and 66550 had come up from Dorchester light engine and sneaked into the other siding (unseen by me coming across Holes Bay). This unit then left as an ECS about 10 minutes later. Then 66550 , I did have photos but they were not that good, came out around 20:27 heading for Southampton maritime and then 3 minutes later the 47 and Painted Pig departed for Bournemouth depot.

I believe this is 2419 "BBC South Today" taken using the Raw setting of the R1 in colour and converted to Black and White on the PC using the supplied software, as with most other SONY products you have to use THEIR supplied software. Its the first picture I have taken with the RAW setting rather than Jpeg and published. This was passing me at Baiter Park, Poole on April 12th. (R1)

BR Standard Class 4 2-6-0 Steam loco No. 76079 double heads with 45407 a LMS Black 5 4-6-0 Steam loco with the return leg of the 1Z83 Weymouth - Clapham Junction via Salisbury leg of the Strong Countryman tour.(R1)

Another shot of the Strong Countryman starting the ascent of Parkstone Bank.(R1)

Apparently this was the first time either of these two steam locomotives had visited Poole.(R1)

2401 "Beaulieu" in charge of the 07:41 (06:54 Ex Weymouth) Poole - Waterloo approaching Poole on Monday April 3rd 2006. I was waiting for the first running of a Freightliner loco on the 6W41 Eastleigh yard to Wool sidings. Unfortunately and unknown to me at the time it was running some 111 minutes late!(R1)

59102 runs through Poole running some 90 minutes late on the 7O48 Whatley - Hamworthy Stone train. The reason why it was running so late is unclear. (R1)

Poole has seen more Freightliner traffic this year than any other years I believe. 66544 passes the signal box and the soon to be removed yard at Poole with the 6W60 Wool - Reading West Yard loaded Sand. (R1)

Another shot of 66544 approaching Poole.(R1)

The consist will go as far as Reading Yard where it will berth for the night before forming the 6M42 Reading West Yard to Neasdon sidings. The wagons will then be emptied and then travel back to Wool (via a run round at Dorchester) the same day. So we have now had EWS, GBRf and Freightliner GM's at or through Poole I hope to see DRS GM's at some point. (R1)

Not content with a GM 59 and GM Fred 66 we also had 2 GM 67's All in the space of 25 minutes :)
67019 rounds the curve at Poole in charge of the 1Z15 Acton Canal Wharf - Bournemouth T+RSMD (via Weymouth) Serco Test Train.(R1)

Another shot of 67019 plus a partial shot of a Network Rail liveried Generator van? (R1)

On the rear of the ensemble was 67013.(R1)

450075 on the 07:28 (Ex 05:40 Basingstoke) Poole to Weymouth service on March 22nd. This is one of only a handful of services that go to Weymouth diagrammed with a class 450 Desiro. (R1)

2404 "Borough of Woking" on the 07:41 (06:54 Ex Weymouth)Poole - Waterloo approaching Poole. (R1)

Newly refurbished Class 442 2401 "Beaulieu" at the rear end of the 07:41 Poole to Waterloo Semi fast service. The slightly different livery can be seen here with the yellow drivers door and the application of a longer reaching red and orange to the middle of the first coach, as well as the red also touching the bottom of the external cab floor.(R1)

Another shot of 2401 on the rear of the 07:41 to Waterloo. (R1)

An unidentified Class 442 on the 07:41 (06:54 Ex) Weymouth - Waterloo service on Monday March 20th (R1)

66017 powers past Sterte (Poole) with the 06:43 6W41 Eastleigh Yard to Wool Sidings empty Sand. Sometime in April'06 this service will be going over to Freightliner Heavy Haul. It is expected that the times will stay the same as well as quite possibly the wagons as EWS hire these from VTG UK (R1)

DR79221 part of the 6 car Speno Rail Grinder having just arrived at Poole with the 6Z14 21.02 Three Bridges - Wareham. This arrived some 20 minutes late around 00:04 at Poole due to a late Weymouth service proceeding this train on the 14th of March. (R1)

DR79226 was at the rear. This was waiting to enter the possession which actually started at Poole and went all the way to Wareham It seems as though the grinding was taking place around the recent works at Holton Heath although this was unconfirmed. This was I believe the first time a Rail Grinder had paid a visit since the debacle of December 4th 2004 where the 3 car Grinder split the points at Poole. See the July December 2004 Gallery for those pics. (R1)

Later on in the day time I went back down to the station to see if the Rail Grinder had been stabled in Poole yard during the day. Unfortunately it had not but 2420 was in the carriage sidings preparing to depart on a Semi Poole - Waterloo service. (R1)

450043 on Brockenhurst - Wareham stopper prepares to leave.

Desiro's 450043 on the 17:12 Brockenhurst - Wareham service passes 444031 on the 17:14 Wareham to Brockenhurst service. (R1)

2412 arrives at Poole on a late running Waterloo - Poole service. (R1)

59104 Village of Great Elm leaves the carriage sidings at Poole with the 7V48 Hamworthy - Whatley Stone empties. (R1)

Another shot of 59104 Village of Great Elm on the 7V48. This berthed in Poole Carriage sidings for an hour before departing. (R1)

2424 rests at Poole, on 18/02/06, before it takes out the Poole to Weymouth service. This unit was used on the following Sunday as a mock up for an emergency exercise as a train accident on a level crossing @ Wood 37 crossing near Dorchester.(R1)

450015 arrives at Poole on a Wareham - Bournemouth service.16/02/06(R1)

47811 arrives at Poole with 2401 Beaulieu over 138 minutes late on Thursday February 16th with the 5X42 Ilford EMUD - Bournemouth T&RSMD via Poole unit move on February 16th. This was supposed to have been delivered late Friday evening but due to an engineering possession and the line between Bournemouth & Poole closed all weekend the return journey was bought forward a number of hours.(R1)

450051 at Poole on the 5th of February with a service for Brockenhurst.(P150)
