Poole Gallery July - December 2009
Welcome to the Poole Gallery for the second part of 2009
PLEASE NOTE ALL PHOTOS ON THIS WEBSITE ARE COPYRIGHT AND MAY NOT BE USED ON OTHER WEBSITES VIA ANY MEANS AVAILABLESaturday October 10th 2009 - We're Trammin!!

I was hoping to get a better pic of this but seeing as I have just been diagnosed with Swine flu then thats outta the question. Here Balfour Beatty DR98218, a ZWA GP Tramm sits in the engine siding in Poole yard. This was taken with my Sony Ericsson C902 phone camera.
Sunday October 4th 2009 - Sunday artwork!!

Being that the pair of 47's were not in a very photo graphical position meant that I had to re think my shots, if any that I decided to take. I managed two. A bit of an arty one here taken from Sterte road of 47245's cab side detail.

A few minutes up the road you come to Sterte footbridge. From here you can see the disgraced 47760 tucked behind 47245. The entire train was stabled in the carriage sidings till around 8:00 am on the Monday morning due to engineering works between Winchester & Basingstoke.
Saturday October 3rd 2009 - The Dartmouth Express well nearly!!

After missing the 1Z92 departure to Kingswear in the morning I was planning to get the return on Video and possibly a tripod night shot of 47760 returning in the late hours of the night but due to a coolant leak on 47760 and after several shutdowns the tour only managed to reach as far as Salisbury where the train was terminated and the tour caped. Passengers were given a few hours in Salisbury as a plan was hatched to get the loco, passengers & train back to Poole. This they managed to achieve via requesting assistance from sister loco that was stabled at Southall (London) and the driver who had to come from Rugby, apparently. 47245 is seen here coming into Platform 1 at Poole with the return 15:54 1Z93 Salisbury - Poole "Dartmouth Express".

By this time it had started to rain heavily so this really was the only other photo I could get as I was filming the arrival and departure of the train. I would pop down on the Sunday at some point to get some more shots if time allowed.
Saturday September 26th 2009 - The Purbeck Fox!!

I am not entirely sure what's going wrong with my photography at the moment but suffice to say its not going the way I would like to. Needless to say I was down on Sterte road bridge on the Saturday morning to photograph The Purbeck Growler tour from Crewe, the lighting was all wrong and overall it just didnt look right. Here is one of the better pictures from the set I took. 37516 + 37706 pass Sterte with Spitfire Tours 1Z49 Crewe - Swanage "Purbeck Growler" Tour.

In the afternoon I decided to go back to Sterte and get a shot of the return working later in the afternoon. I also wanted to get a shot of the installation of a new cable trough that had been taking shape over the past week. I had been told that this was being laid all the way to Wareham. What it was for was unclear. Note the Fox laying in the sun to the bottom left of the pic. I only noticed the Fox in the picture when I came to process the picture a few days ago!!

Having been down on the footbridge for sometime I looked down and noticed this fox asleep in the foliage. This is a zoomed in shot of the fox so it looks a bit fuzzy. But I like it.

Here a normal 300mm zoomed in shot of Mr fox giving me one hell of a Care Bear stare!!

37706 & 37516 Accelerates past Sterte with the 1Z50 Swanage - Crewe return working, and making the Fox run hell for leather into the under growth in the process. 37706 is becoming a candidate for most loco to visit / pass through Poole for 2009. Results at the end of the year in the Dorset Freight section.
Friday August 28th 2009 - Luna

Where I live I am quite lucky to get some shots of the sun set and as and when its in the right place the moon. With just the simple name of Luna applied to the photo The crescent moon is lit up from the setting sun from the right of the pic.
Thursday August 27th 2009 - Mid afternoon Network Brian!!

Waiting their next turn of duty 450016 & 444030 in the carriage sidings at Sterte.

Bringing back memories of the class 33/1 pushing the 4-TC's up from Weymouth Network Rail liveried 31465 pushes the 1Q12 Eastleigh - Eastleigh Via Westbury & Weymouth past Sterte. Ex Scotrail, ex Anglian & ex One DBSO 9701 is at the helm of this 3 coach ensemble.

Its not every day that you get to see a Network Rail test train during daylight hours round my neck o' the woods. So as soon as I knew this one was showing. I booked a day off work and came down to photograph the working. It was sods law though there was no sand or stone trains due to run either, which kinda pee'd me off somewhat. Oh well them's the breaks.
Wednesday August 19th 2009 - Sunny South Tangmere

Making more come backs to Poole in 2009 than Status Quo, Battle of Britain 4-6-2 34067 Tangmere is seen passing Sterte with Steam Dreams 1Z92 London Victoria - Weymouth Sunny South Coast charter.
As can be seen here the problem with taking photos from the road bridge at Sterte, is that if its nice and sunny (and Hot) around midday you get the sun plum in your face if you want to take photos of anything coming from the Bournemouth location. Still its a nice place to shoot from.

Tangmere storms through Sterte with the return 1Z93 Weymouth - Waterloo Sunny South Special. This photo was taken by my mate Dave Fellows. But what stood out for me about the photo was the sun casting the shadow of the train amongst the steam and smoke from Tangmere. A very good photo.

Because I took the photos in the morning I decided to video the return journey in the evening. Above is the result. The noise towards the end of the video are the Poole Pirates warming their bikes up in the Wimborne Road Stadium off to the left of the shot.
Saturday August 1st 2009 - Charlotte & Janice's Day at the Seaside

The first day of August saw one of the last 3 tours to visit our area. 73141 "Charlotte" & 73204 "Janice" run to Weymouth on a UK Rail-Tours tour from Crewe. The two ED's are stopped at signal PO48. Its path was occupied by a 5 car Desiro that was running late.

With most trips to the seaside someone always feels unwell. In this case it was 73141 "Charlotte". They were both due to stop at Branksome and one of the loco's was due to be switched over to auxiliary diesel power but Charlotte had to have one of her traction motors isolated so it was decided to leave them both using the juice rail down to Weymouth.

73141 & 73204 pass the high street level crossing at Poole with the 1Z92 08:40 London Waterloo - Weymouth tour.
Thursday July 9th 2009 - Steam, Sand & MPV!!!

During a week long crew training run from Eastleigh - Eastleigh via Westbury DR98902 & DR98952 disgraced itself by failing at Upwey. 37706 was despatched (whilst on its way to Weymouth) to rescue the stricken MPV. It was dumped in the headshunt at Poole until the following day.

66213 picked up the MPV.on the Friday. It ran back to Eastleigh as the 6Z20 Poole CS - Eastleigh T&RSMD.

66953 is the first 66/9 to have visited the Dorset country side since Freightliner took over the sand contract.

66953 runs on a Thursday 69O49 Neasdon - Wool sand empties. The last few months have seen rather erratic timings of the sand running. It has been re timed to the following times:-
Monday 6O49 Neasdon - Wool (sand empties)
0W49 Wool - Soton Maritime
Tuesday 0M42 Soton Maritime - Wool
6M42 Wool - Neasdon (loaded Sand)
As seen above the 6O49 empties ran back on a Thursday it then ran loaded as the 6M42 to Neasdon some 4 days later on July 14th.

SR 4-6-2 Battle of Britain Class 34067 Tangmere glides into platform 1 at Poole. Running late due to problems with 37706 whilst hauling Tangmere on its turning move. Tangmere made it back but with no loco to do the shunt at Weymouth SWT's 73235 was despatched to help with the move and to bank the train up Upwey bank.

The un-assisted storming of Upwey Bank can bee seen
HERE. Its rumored that the loco got down to a speed of 17 mph on the approach to the summit at Upwey.
