Welcome to the fourth page of the Poole Gallery January - June 2008
Monday June 30th 2008 - A Full Load

One of only 11 Freightliner owned Class 66's that passed through Poole during the first 6 months of 2008 in charge of the Wool Sand. 66601 The Hope Valley slows to 20mph as it approaches the sharp curve at Poole with the 6M42 Wool - Neasdon loaded sand.
Saturday June 28th 2008 - Thumping Birthday Mr Hentis

For the first time in 7 years 1001 returns to Dorset with a GBRF staff charter and shakedown run after having central door locking fitted.

The other end of 1001 shows a small warning panel instead of the all over yellow front end. It also shows the data panel.

Just one of the names that are associated with the Hastings unit.

With the driver at the other end of the train 1001 goes off to the depot for servicing and watering. Since the switching off of the water supply at the carriage sidings at Poole most of the tours will now only be heading for Bournemouth by the looks of it as that is the nearest watering facility. As Southwest trains wont want to pay for the repair of the leaking water pipes at Poole if they have a fully working facility at Bournemouth depot some 4 miles up the road. So with this in mind any future tours could will be going to Weymouth or Bournemouth.
The arrival at Branksome and the departure into Bournemouth West of 1001 on June 28th 2008.
Thursday June 12th 2008 - Hope Valley Sand

450103 trundles out of the carriage sidings to form the 15:37 Poole - Waterloo service.

After what seemed like an eternity 66601 The Hope Valley replaces 66531 on the Wool - Neasdon and return sand trains.

The Hope Valley nameplate. Why the blue O? you ask. Well its to do with Freightliner's partnership with Blue Circle Cement.

66601 The Hope Valley 6O49 Neasdon - Wool Sand empties.
Sunday June 1st 2008 - Al'right me 'ol Sparrow!

Well at least its not a Pigeon!! I was on Sterte footbridge waiting for 2 return engineering trains from the weekends work to photograph and the only thing of interest was this little Sparrow that was sat on top of the carriage sidings light box.
Friday May 30th - Veg Express & the Poole Yard Dosser returns!!

Southwest Trains Class 121 Bubble car 906012 John Cameron passes through Poole enroute to Dorchester South with the 5Z21 from Southampton Central Vegetation spotting service. Basicly they were noting down places where excessive Tree / Vegetation Growth was infringing on or near the railway.

Later on (much later like more nearer to Saturday May 31st) I was down the station again for a few hours to capture the 7 engineering trains turning up for the weekend work around the admiralty bridge area near Holton Heath. The Poole Yard dosser, DR73276 had returned but this time was wide awake and on the down line awaiting permission to enter the possession, which started at Poole.
Saturday May 17th 2008 - Hamworthy Branch work

Work started on May 12th in removing and replacing 2 crossovers to enable trains on the branch to run round without the use of a shunter and the level crossing gates. Here the crossover has been removed and work is on going to straight line the track. Its thought that other freight trains will be using the branch by the end of the year.

Re aligning the sleepers manually.... tough job!!

Old point work, rails and Sleepers thrown to one side. I hope to get some more shots of this one the branch is put back to rights. Nice to see that Network Rail are spending money on the branch, so at least its future as a working branch for the time being is good.
Saturday May 10th 2008 - The Purbeck Explorer

47773 stops at Poole in charge of Vintage trains Purbeck explorer from Birmingham Moor Street - Weymouth. 50049 "Defiance" is on the rear.

Not a very good shot this one i'm afraid. I had my 200 mm lens on and was about 10 seconds away from getting bowled by a 444 so had to get a quick snap. As it was the 50 passed me as the Desiro blocked my view.... with many apologies from the driver!!! Thanks for slowing up Driver, he did his best. This was the second 50 to visit Poole in two days.

50049 now on the return leg of the Purbeck Explorer waits to get the green from Poole with the return 1Z45 Weymouth - Birmingham Moor Street. 47773 is attached on the rear.

OK an arty shot I didnt think would turn out to be any good but is included here. 50049 viewed from my video camera and as a blurred image from the Cannon (top of the pic).
The video of the railtour including being bowled by the 444!!
Thursday May 8th 2008 - We got ourselves 2 convoys and sand!!

73107 Spitfire tow's Southwest Trains 4VEP 3417 Gordon Petitt through Poole with the 5Z73 Bournemouth T&RSMD - Furzebrook move for the coming weekends Swanage Beer & Diesel Gala. This is convoy 1.

Having been towed to Bournemouth depot a week previous 3417 looks as new after a wash and brush up. Will this be the last outing of Gordon to Swanage?

After a decision to change from a 50 mm to 200 mm lens I had to make it quick as this was approaching the signal box at a sharp rate of knotts. I did not manage to capture 66531 with the 6M42 Wool MOD - Neasdon Sand on video as it caught us all by surprise.

What a difference a year makes. Not far from the place that Parkstone Ned was caught sleeping in the pouring rain during an engineers all nighter at Poole, than Parkstone Ned here again ableit it being a few weeks from a full year and a few feet from where he was asleep. He must like that spot!!

With the customary "Bluebirds on Tour" headboard 66724 "Drax Power Station" leads D444 (50044) Exeter, 37906, 37275 & 20096 pass through Poole en route to Swanage diesel gala as the 0Z72 Kidderminster - Furzebrook. This was the second pair of 37's down and third class 20 down with in a month and the first of 2 class 50's to work through Poole in two days.

D444 "Exeter" I have to say the only 50 that was in green was 50007 "Sir Edward Elgar" and this was GWR Brunswick green and suited the loco but D444 looks dreadful in this two tone green livery.

37906 in Railfreight Grey livery.

37275 in BR Blue. Even in standard corporate livery the 37's still look great.

20096 in Railfreight two tone grey livery. This livery does suit the loco.
A re uploaded video of the two convoys due to a copyright issue by the original "Convoy" music's owner. Still they cant stop me saying CONVOY!!
Tuesday May 6th 2008 - Late night Brians

Bit of an arty shot here. 31459 & 31190 pass through Poole , although they were supposed to stop with a test train headed for Weymouth. The shot was taken using TV mode on the Canon 400D (on a tripod) with a 5 second exposure on a 10 second timer delay via remote.
Wednesday April 23rd 2008 - Mid Week Rail drop

The driver of 66213 stopped at platform 2 at Poole, phones the signalman to gain access to the up line for a wrong line working to Holton Heath for a raildrop. The raildrop is for forthcoming engineering work at Keysworth crossing for the weekend of May 23rd - 26th. 66221 was on the rear.
