Poole Gallery July - December 2006

Saturday August 5th 2006 will be a day that some rail enthusiasts will see with a tinge of sadness as the start of the eventual run down of the Class 442 Wessex Electric fleet. 2416 "Mum in a million 1997, Doreen Scanlon". briefly rests after it arrived at Poole on its FINAL passenger run from Waterloo to Poole.
2416 arrived at Poole with the 1B73 22:05 London Waterloo - Poole service. It then worked the 00:38 5B74 ECS working to Bournemouth T&RSMD for the last time and off lease. So long Doreen
This unit will be used as a source of spares for the rest of the fleet. Problems with the onboard air conditioning. Apparently this type of air con unit on the Wessie was the only type on the entire fleet. Also a desperate need of spares is needed if these units are to be kept in service for the near future. I know it all comes down to money at the end of the day but its always sad to see any train cannibalised. As it stands the other 16 units (unless any more are to go off lease and used for spares) are still due to go for their repaint.

2420 "City of Southampton" draws into platform 1 with the 19:44 service to Waterloo from Poole.
A little over a year ago we were recovering from the shock of terrorism hitting the UK shores. We also saw the first running of BR '8P' 4-6-2 No. 71000 "Duke of Gloucester" to Poole on a special to Weymouth. this was the first time it has been down this way this year due to the first sunny south special being cancelled, the second one was hauled by 2 Class 31 loco's and the most recent one charter (see July 29th photos below) that should have both been steam hauled but could not because of a Steam ban around the region.
Another shot of the Duke passing, under the signal gantry at Poole.
31452 "Minotaur" on the rear of the train. This is the 3rd time we have had a Class 31 loco down at Poole in two weeks!!! Under BR days in Corporate blue days you were lucky to see 1 at all down here. The only BR Blue 31 I saw at Poole was 31111 heading to Winfrith atomic plant with a nuclear flask for processing circa 1983-1984. Amazing what privatisation does really.
July 29th 2006
A grey day and we have a black and white shot of 2420 "City of Southampton" approaching platform 1 at Poole with a Weymouth - Waterloo service.
Another black & white shot this time of 47703 "Hermes" on the return leg of the 1Z92 Weymouth - Victoria - John Lewis Partners Seaside Special private charter.
Another shot of 47703. This should have been operated by kettle 71000 Duke of Gloucester. Due to the unusual amount of very hot and sunny weather Network Rail still had a Steam ban in place on the network. So FM rail provided a class 47 and for the second time in less than 10 days a 31 came visiting.
31128 "Charybdis" to be precise.

Three days after 450112 was delivered its time for 450111 to be delivered. 66068 crawls into the carriage sidings at a maximum speed of 5 mph @ 07:50 in the morning!!!
The shunter prepares to uncouple the 66.
Rather shiny looking 450111.
With the photographer in the reflection of the rear cab windows (EEK) 66068 moves towards the headshunt and away from the consist.
66068 changes tracks and prepares for the run round. Its been far too many years since I have seen the Ground position signals showing 2 white lights. It basicly means I haven't been down this area of the line for a while taking pictures of trains moving around.
A close up shot of the Dellner 12 coupling.
Ex Intermodal flat FIA 837049130011 as part of the consist.
All Photos for the 28th July were taken using the Sony DSC P150 and not the R1.

66137 runs past platform 2 at Poole with the 7X53 Eastleigh Yard - Bournemouth T&RSMD Desiro Delivery run. The unit was 450112.
450112 passes under the signal gantry at Poole as it runs into the carriage sidings to enable the 66 to run round and then run to Bournemouth Depot.
The EWS shunter prepares to walk the length of the train checking to see if everything is ok. The consist had 8 VGA's/VKA's and 2 barrier wagons made up from intermodal wagons in the consist. Its been a while since the VGA's/VKA's have been around our neck of the woods.

31452 "Minotaur" & 31602 "Chimaera" on the return leg of the 1Z92 Sunny South Special from Waterloo to Weymouth.
The 2 31's were substituted instead of Kettle 71000 Duke of Gloucester due to a High line side fire risk along the route that the Duke should have taken to Weymouth, Due to the short heat wave we have suffered over the last few days Network Rail imposed a Network wide Steam Ban. The Duke is scheduled to run again to Weymouth from Waterloo on Saturday July 29th but this has yet to be seen.
66566 passes under the soon to be demolished station footbridge.

Half of the new bridge that will be installed over the harbor inlet to Poole park in the next couple of months. The other half of the bridge is out of shot to the right.
This is the old "new" bridge that should have been installed in February 2004, but was postponed due to dangerous weather conditions. Kind of lucky it was not installed at that time really as its since been deemed unsafe due to the wrong mix or type of concrete the bridge was manufactured from!!!
First time visitor (AFAIK) to the area Balfour Beatty tagged Plasser & Theurer USP 5000 Ballast Regulator DR77316 languishes in the soon to be modified Poole Yard.
Port of Poole's dock shunter rarely see's much use. Its last use was when Crude Oil Waste (C.O.W) came over from Furzey Island to be loaded in to OBA wagons and taken away by EWS, but this has since stopped as the C.O.W is now shipped out via road. What does the future hold for this shunter as well as the entire Branch line itself is unsure, although some Freightliner representatives walked the entire length of the goods branch a few months ago and rumors of possible new freight flows to and from the docks by rail, but how much of that will turn out to be pure speculation.... who knows?. The shunter was built by Yorkshire Engine Co. and thats all the details I have.

With some of FM Rail motive power in short supply owing to reliability issues Serco turned to DRS for power to take charge of their Dorset Coast Serco train for on Monday July 10th. 37609 (leading) and 37611 (tailing) pass through Poole on the outward leg of the 1Z14 to Weymouth. Both these loco's were Kops for me.
37611 on the rear of the train was running and powering as well as the 37 at the front.
450020 powers up Parkstone Bank as it rounds the curve at Baiter Park (Poole) on the Wareham to Brockenhurst run.
66548 on the 6W60 Wool - Neasdon loaded sand in rather crap conditions slows for the 25mph speed restriction across the small bridge less than 100 meters up the line. Incidently various parts of the new bridge were being "moved" around the Old Goods Yard by a crane on Monday afternoon.
37611 rounds the bend at Baiter Park with the return leg of the 1Z14 to Bournemouth Depot for overnight stabling before going onwards to Portsmouth, Reading & Salisbury on Tuesday. Unfortunately these are the best pictures I could get as the heavens opened further more just to try and ruin the shot!!!
37609 at the rear end of the Serco train. This was the first time since 1999 that DRS locomotives had visited my neck of the woods and the first lot of 37's to visit since May 13th 2004. I hope we wont have to wait as long to see the next lot!!
July 03rd 2006
66612 Fourth Raider slows round the bend at Baiter park with the 0W60 Southampton Maritime - Wool light engine move on July 3rd. This loco has no "Freightliner" branding on the body sides.
Another shot of 66612. This was the first time since June 27th that it had run.
After bringing 2403 back from Ilford on Friday. 47830 Heads down to Poole with 2404 in tow to run round for its trip to Ilford and refurbishment.
The hot early morning sun reflects off the drivers offside cab window of 450039 on a service bound for Brockenhurst.
47830 rounds the bend at Baiter and prepares for the 1:50 climb to Bournemouth and the run to Ilford.
