Eastleigh 100 (23rd - 25th May 2009)

Welcome to the Eastleigh 100 open weekend gallery. It was the first open day I had visited for a good number of years and the first one at Eastleigh for about 21 years, see pages 2,3 & 4 of Eastleigh in the BR Years for more info and pictures. The pictures here were taken from the Sunday morning around 10:30 - 16:00. Overall it was a very good open weekend but with a few issues. The 3 day event was lacking any presence from Freightliner which as a local operator to Eastleigh and frequent visitor to Eastleigh I thought was a big loss they never appeared. I was disappointed as well in the lack of the following classes 08/09, 56,58 (surely one of each class could have been dragged from across the road) 60, 67, 86, 87, 90, 91 or a 92 also with only one make of 66 on display it was a rather poor show. Although literally all the 3 sub classes of 59's were represented it was a disappointment not to see the classes of loco. But as I said overall a great open weekend.

First up and exhibited right at the entrance to the event was 07007, the former D2991 for many years after its withdrawal had been out of regular use at Eastleigh, but has since had a lick of paint an overhaul and is being used to move stock around the Works complex.

Ever since seeing this loco at the first Eastleigh open day a good few years back I have always taken a shine to the old girl. Also I remember seeing 1 or 2 of them passing the old High street level crossing at Poole in the latter half of the 70's

Visiting from the South Devon Railway was 33002 Sea king. In CE livery.

Swanage Railway's 0-4-4T M7 30053. it must be said that the loco had a very shabby & quick paint job done to it as the 30053 running numbers were still visible through the paint work.

Another end shot of 07007.

Type 4 & 5 line up. From the left:- 47580 "County of Essex", 55022 Royal Scots Grey, 45060 "Sherwood Forester" & D1015 "Western Champion".

33002 "Sea King"

One of my favorite liveries on the class 47 was Large Logo with the Stratford white roof and the cockney sparrow motif with a black headcode box. This always looked good whether it was at the head of a freight or passenger train. Here 47580 "County of Essex" is one such example.

The other end of the type 4 & 5 line up.

Parked out of the way was Midland Railway center's 31108 attached to a breakdown crane. I think it was old Oak commons I am not to sure.

The Old Oak Common breakdown crane ADRC 96710.

Privately owned 50026 "Indomitable" in large logo livery. One of the only two liveries that looked good on a 50. The other being Network South East.

73201 (ex 72142) reunited with her "Broadlands" name plates and crests.

73201's nameplate.

One of the more dubious repaints of the year must goto 50135, no its not a typo its been re numbered as a Class 50/1 and painted into Loadhaul livery. A livery that if I recall none of the class carried. Although its very striking. Its also been re united with its "Ark Royal" nameplate and crest.

50135 "Ark Royal" nameplate & crest.
