Eastleigh September 26th 2008

Page two documenting my fourth trip out for 2008.

First Great Western 158 158950 sits outside one of the sheds at Eastleigh. Inside the sheds are several One Anglia & Virgin MkII coaches being made ready for export to New Zealand. The 158 left the depot later on in the afternoon as I noted it at Southampton Central in the evening.

Having made it back to the depot earlier on in the morning 47749 now sits still coupled to the RHTT wagon that it bought from Eastleigh's East Yard, in this black & white shot.

66590 seen earlier in the morning passing South through Eastleigh is now noted going North although its slowing for a driver change at Eastleigh.

158850 passes 66590's train on its circular tour to Salisbury via Redbridge.

KTA pocket Wagon 97717 on the rear of 66590's consist. With the W10 freight clearance scheme due to start in 2009 these wagons will soon be made redundant on the trains from Southampton Maritime / Millbrook to the North. I actually koppped my final KTA wagon (97705) on this visit to Eastleigh as well. So I was a happy chappie.

An unidentified Brown Nose Class 221 approaches Campbell Road Bridge on its way to Bournemouth.

Two shots of 66160 leaving the EWS stabling point and waiting for permission to move to Platform 3 and onto the Yard.

This scene depicts Eastleigh to a tee. Having gained permission to proceed to the yard 66160 approaches platform 3 as 444015 hurries past with a service to Weymouth as 450007 sits in platform 1 and an unidentified Freightliner 66 slows for a driver change over on Platform 2.It either happens all at once or not at all at Eastleigh. Sods law but a great pic.

Eastleigh is one of these rare places on today's railway where you can turn an entire consist around so it can be literally the opposite way round. This for instance is particularly useful for steam tours if there is no Diesel present (This has been used for several steam tours in the past). The loop is accessed via the Fareham line and takes you past the old BRML Depot and through the EWS stabling point. It takes about 10 minutes to negotiate around the loop but it saves any lengthy turning maneuver further up the line. Here 66012 hauls 979067 so it will be able to fit on the front of a long Welded Rail Train in the proper operational direction.

On my way back from trying to have a look at the back of the EWS stabling point I decided to get a couple of shots of some old but not forgotten friends. Here 58011 in Fertis livery awaits its fate at the stabling point.

58007 & 58049 both in Seco Rail livery also sit on the stabling point awaiting their fate. I first saw 58049, 45, 46, 47,48 & 50 in various stages of construction at a Doncaster Works open day a good few years ago.

Back on Eastleigh's platform 3 now and 66085 approaches platform 3, after leaving the yard, with an intermodal service for Southampton Docks.

Still in faded Mainline livery 09019 hauls, nose end first, 66043 from the yard to the Stabling point. Presumably the 66 was out of or severely low on fuel (That severe there was not enough fumes in the tank for the loco to get from the Yard to the depot fuel line!!).

377302 made a surprise visit with a service to Fareham.

66069 brings the blue sausage train empties into platform 1 for a driver change. This train goes via the Romsey line.

09019 hauls 66043 on the end of an empty Long Welded Rail train from the EWS Stabling point into the Yard.
